Arrogance or Humility?

In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility towards one another, because 'God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on Him, because He cares about you. 1 Peter 5:5-7

What causes us to be arrogant? Fear, anxiety, wrong thinking. When we are afraid that others will not treat us well, we take charge and force them by our behaviour. Arrogance hurts others but more importantly it hurts us. By subjecting ourselves, in faith, to the elders, then we are safe. Notice I said in faith. If I subject myself in fear and trembling I will be abused but if I do it in faith, trusting God to use those elders, God acts on my behalf.

Young men are addressed in the above scripture, probably because young men are full of attitude and energy and are 'going to do it themselves,' whereas Peter, who was young once and an outspoken young man who often got things wrong, had learned to submit and trust. He had authority to write what he did, he had been there and done things the wrong way, when His Lord first had him as a disciple.

Knowing that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble is awesome. We all want to live in grace and here we have the how to, stay humble. Amen!

God will lift us up at the proper time, trust Him! Amen!
