Peter's exhortation: be serious, be alert, calls us Western. Heisting to rightly be aware of the big picture. What is happening across the world, what is my responsibility? What does God want me to do? Surely this life is not about collecting things, gluttony and self-indulgence. Why am I here?
We have a real enemy, his names are Satan, the Devil to name a few. He is a destroyer, prison maker, liar, cheat, gossip and slanderer. He is looking for someone to devour, let it not be you.
Again suffering is the topic. Perhaps Peter had heard that this group of people were suffering, or complaining about suffering. There were plenty of Christians suffering but the more they suffered the less it became an issue.
I just read an account by a Christian doctor, Ida Igonoh, who was the second to contract the Ebola virus after the recent outbreak. The Lord was her strength and she refused to believe she would die. She did suffer but she did not die. She sent a report of all that happened to her to Bill Gates and he published it on social media. I like that man and pray God touches his life in a very personal way.
The doctor did everything she could to help herself, she meditated on Psalm 91, she had her pastor call her every morning and pray, she had her church praying, she listened to tapes, read uplifting literature and God redeemed her whilst others died, she drank copious amounts of fluid as well as eating what she could.
No whining there!
