Untaught and Unstable

Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard, so that you are not led astray by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen! 2 Peter 3:17,18

What do we know in advance? Verse 16b: 'the untaught and unstable twist what they do not understand about the apostle Paul's letters, to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of the scriptures.' (Version is mine)

I remember as a new Christian gathering together with a lot of other new Christians for fellowship, as often as we could and we studied the scriptures. A couple of young men had interpreted the scripture about women wearing hats in church to mean us girls should be wearing hats, until the leadership caught up with them and all was sorted.

Imagine not having a leadership group that had sound scriptural doctrine to guide you, what a disaster, I'd be still wearing hats. Well I actually enjoy a hat occasionally, mainly because I drive a convertible and live in Australia where we need hats when out in the sun for long in summer. However, choosing to wear a hat is fun, being told to wear one is another story.

The young men who tried to enforce this doctrine were untaught. I would not have called them unstable, I would have been had I submitted to such teaching.

When we submit to any form of legalism we put ourselves into bondage. Jesus came to set us free not tie us in knots. Amen!

He is glorified as we live in the freedom truth brings. Amen!
