Blessed Are Those........
When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. The He began to teach them, saying:
The poor in spirit are blessed, for the Kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted.
The gentle are blessed for they will inherit the earth.
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled.
The merciful are blessed, for they will be shown mercy.
The pure in heart are blessed, for they will see Godthe peacemakers are blessed, for they will be called sons of God.
Those who are persecuted for righteousness are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me. Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven, for that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:1-12
In Isaiah 61:[ the Messiah brings good news to the poor. Jesus, here, is saying that the poor in spirit are those who recognise their need for repentance, theirs is the Kingom.
The promise of the Kingdom comes in verses 3 and 10, much like a bracket around all that goes in between, the remaining beatitudes.
The first three beatitudes identify Jesus as the servant Isaiah prophesied about in Is 61.
Psalm 37:11 identifies the gentle as humble and inheriting the earth, or the land.
The disciples were the new Israel going into a promised land, a new, recreated earth that lasts all eternity. This is our hope and future.
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will have it imparted to them, they will not find it by self effort.
Merciful people are those who show mercy to others, forgiving them with a kind heart.
Peacemaking involves resolving conflict promptly, apologising when needed and making acts of restitution, refusing to seek revenge and humbly serving and loving one's enemies.
The purest form of righteousness is pursued by disciples who know their good deeds will demand great sacrifice and will result in pain rather than immediate reward.
I find the beatitudes very carthartic. They cleanse my soul, challenge my attitudes and humble me, ready to believe again. Amen!
