A Heathen Defending the Truth
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands, in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves!"
All the crowd answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. Matthew 27:24-26
Here we have a heathen man struggling to preserve Christ's life and His own people demanding it. Pilate could see Jesus' innocence and wanted nothing to do with the taking of His life.
The saying, "His blood be on us and our children," was a callous and indifferent statement. How can we call down a curse on our children and their children! Our behaviour must not impute blame to our forebears. They must be able to decide for themselves.
I am aware that all I do lays down a foundation of righteousness or unrighteousness for my grandchildren. This life is not all about me and how I feel, what I fancy or what I am compelled to do. It is about Christ in me, the hope of glory.
