Position

Then the mother of Zebedee's two sons came with her sons and kneeled down in front of Him and asked a favour of Him.
"What is it you want?" Jesus asked.
"Grant that in Your Kingdom one of these two sons may sit at your right hand and the other the left."
Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am to drink?" "We can," they answered.
Jesus replied, "You will indeed drink from my cup but as to who sits on My right or left is not mine to give. These places are prepared for who My Father chooses."
Matthew 20:20-23

Ever got caught up in the moment and ran with grandiose thoughts? I have. We are so earthly at times. We judge a situation from our feeble perspectives and do not consider the big picture.

We judge others as not as good as us, we become self-righteous at time and praise God the Lord comes along with a levelling experience that brings us back to earth.

This is what is happening here. A mother who loves her sons and only sees their good character asks for what she would consider the very best position for her sons. The fact that her sons went with her shows they were in on the deal. Jesus questioned them not the mother.

We have to remember one of these sons was John the apostle whom Jesus loved. However, being loved by Jesus was not enough to guarantee a position.

Oh how we love position. Yet the only position offered us is to be loved by the Father and that He and Jesus would make their home in us. Did I say only? This is a glorious position. We are also invited to sit with Jesus on His throne. It is a better place than beside Him. We have to be willing to share this position with many. We are one of many, equals, not better than many.
