Wisdom Comes Clothed in Women's Clothes
Then she let them down by a rope through the window, since she lived in a house that was built into the wall of the city. "Go to the hill country so that the men pursuing you won't find you," she said to them. "Hide yourselves there for three days until they return; afterwards, go on your way." Joshua 2:15,16
If seasoned warriors can follow the directions of a prostitute and have wisdom enough to discern she is giving good advice, then we can learn a lesson here. Rahab knew her land and her people, but the spies did not. They trusted her knowledge.
My dad was sometimes, a handy man, and sometimes a gunky man. By this I mean he was a man who thought he knew how to solve most things and he did solve a lot, but not all. I came to respect the things he did know. Growing up I saw my dad strip down the mower often because it was having problems. My brothers grew up following suit, not always with success.
I must have watched and learned more than I thought because now, when my mower plays up, guess what I do? I don't quite strip it down but I pull apart all the things I can manage, such as the filter, the spark plug, the fuel tank. I also saw my dad make new gaskets out of cardboard and anything that was the right thickness and pliable enough. Last time my mower broke down this was one thing I had to do, and to my delight, it worked.
Refusing to receive intelligence from those who can help us is foolish. Judging a person incompetent because they are office workers and not mechanics is also unwise. Many a good mechanic is one in their leisure. Many a man is a good cook, a good housekeeper.
Refusing to receive biblical insight from anyone but a pastor is also fraught with difficulty. Many Christians who walk with thei Lord and hold steadfastly to Him have insights that some clergy do not have.
Whilst visiting an Anglican archbishop recently I got talking about loving my neighbourhood and the things I am doing to reach my neighbours. He liked my ideas so much he asked if he could quote me when he goes to speak at some churches on the Northen Beaches of Sydney. He said to me, "You never know, you just might become famous." I know that if that happens it will be God and no one else.
As we read further on we see that the soldiers did exactly as Rahab had instructed and received the outcome she promoted. Be wise enough to hear good instruction, no matter where it comes from. Amen!
