As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him. But He would not let Him; instead, He told Him, "Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you." So he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for Him, and they were amazed. Mark 5:18-20
Jesus had just set the demon possessed man free and although the man so appreciated what Jesus had done for Him, Jesus would not let Him come with Him. Why? This man had a story that needed to be told and as it was told hearts would open to the gospel.
As Jesus sets each one of us free we now have a task to tell our story and as we do we open hearts to Him and the gospel spreads.
If we stop telling our story we become flavourless and are consumed by the world around us. We stop salting the world and then the world starts leaching us, until we are parched bones in the wilderness.
If the demoniac had gone with Jesus his opportunity to testify would have been lost, Jesus would have been enough for the crowds and the man would not have seen the need to testify. Yet, when left in in the environment where all his problems began he became a testimony by the change in his life. The challenge for the man would have been to stay changed as he did not have a life line to the freedom he had received. I wonder if he caught the boat across to the other side and watched Jesus at times. I know I would. I am grateful for the Internet. I can watch from afar.
As Jesus sets each of us free we need to tell somebody, anybody! The message needs to go out. Amen!
