Betrayal Lives in Hearts

When evening came, He arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me-one who is eating with Me!"
They began to be distressed and say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?"
He said to them, "It is the one of the Twelve-the one who is dipping bread with me in the bowl. For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." Mark 14:17-21

Have you ever been so angry with someone that, against love, against all sense, you turn against the one you have loved and shared life with? I see this all the time in divorce. A man or woman who has been faithfully married for many years becomes offended and angry or seduced into an illicit affair. Their hearts now belong to another, be it another person or the spirit of offence or anger. They will harden their hearts and walk to the altar of divorce.

This is what happened with Judas. Judas must have made a vow: "If ever Jesus does xxxxx, I am out of here." In his case it was all about money. Jesus defended the woman who broke the alabaster box over His head, Judas believed it was wasteful, it was valuable, worth a lot of money.

Our challenge is to not allow such a heart to possess us. How do we do this? Keep our hearts honest, keep it clean, keep short records, keep close to Jesus, to His heart. Amen!
