Moving On
Make every effort to come to me soon, for Demas has deserted me, because he loved this present world, and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalamtia. Only Luke is with me. 2 Tim 4:9-11
How would Paul have appeared to others in this time? An old man who had lost it? Almost time for him to leave? How would he have appeared to Timothy? To Luke?
Paul was endeavouring to prepare Timothy for his departure, giving him sound teaching on personal behaviour and also teaching on leadership. How would Timothy have been at this time? Was he ready to let go of Paul and stand along, no longer having his mentor to encourage and advise him.
Every leader will face such times, be it through ill health, opposition, factions or personal threats soon to be realised. How would we want to prepare those we love for our departure?
The changing of the guard can be a peaceful time or a difficult and emotional time, depending on the circumstances. However, what may come, in God's economy is able to be traversed, with His grace. Yes there will be pain and grief, but we will make it through and a new day awaits all, those who go on and those who stay. We can trust Him! Amen!
