The Cornerstone

So honour will come to you who believe, but for the unbelieving:
'The stone that the builders rejected- this One has become the cornerstone,'
And 'a stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over.'
They stumble because they disobey the message; they were destined for this. 1 Peter 2:7,8

No matter how independent you are and how much you reject Christ, He is the cornerstone, the stone that begins the building and from whom all measurements are taken. It is as if a black man rejects his race, nationhood and ethnicity, he is still a black man.

We were created to have fellowship with Christ, nothing else will satisfy. We were made in His image, no amount of rejection of the fact will change that fact. We can run from Him, but He is immoveable, the centre of all that we are. Eventually we will come to see all our self-efforts are futile.

We trip over the truth, which is unchangeable. Our hearts smite us for our sin, we can drink away the pain, drug the pain, thrash our bodies in an effort to become master, yet in the blink of an eye, they will lose.

When we refuse Christ we are destined for a life of frustration, tripping and never completely winning. We may win a few rounds but death is the final master. Where will eternity find us?
