Jesus Chose the Foolish to Confound the Wise
John responded, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because her does not follow us."
"Don't stop him, "Jesus told him, "because whoever is not against you is for you." Luke 9:49,50
This comment of John comes after Jesus teaches His disciples about being humble, like little children. You know how, when you don't get it, you bumble on with something totally irrelevant and make yourself look like mud? Well! Here we have a classic example. Prior to teaching about being humble, the disciples were fighting over who was greatest. Now, this comment seems to follow on from that train of thought: "Look how good we are Jesus, we stopped a misuse of power, out power."
This comment relays that John did not fully comprehend the message given, he was still, somewhere else. In fact he was in the wrong place.
You could be forgiven for saying: "And Jesus gave these guys the authority and responsibility for carrying on the good news of the kingdom of God? Wow! Was there a shortage of good, sensible, reliable men?"
There is room for us, bumbling along, saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, missing the mark, missing the point. Jesus chose what the world considered foolish to confound the wise. He still does! And I am so grateful!
