Why Things Happen

There were some present at that very time who told Him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. And He said to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered thus? I tell you No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, do you think they were worse offenders than all those who dwell in Jerusalem? I tell you No; but unless you repent you will likewise perish. Luke 13:1-5

We can assume that the sins we see in others cause calamity to strike and somehow overlook our own. Jesus was here, basically, telling the listeners that repentance was necessary. There was a calamity that befell the national capital in the years after Christ's death and resurrection, thousands died in a Roman suppression.

Self-righteousness is a disgusting disease that endeavours to trap us. If we see ourself speaking poorly of others, we are trapped and only humility and repentance will set us free.

Tornados, cyclones, fires, tsunamis all are common, all over ft he world. Recently a prominent Christian leader was struck by lightening at a church camp here in South Australia. It left many bewildered. I remember the day I heard about Keith Green being killed in an aeroplane accident, I was devastated. Yet things do happen and it is up to each of us, individually, to be ready at any moment, and for those remaining to not judge. Amen!
