It is Finished

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven into one piece from the top. So they said to each other, "Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it." They did this to fulfill the Scripture that says: 'They divided My clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.'(Psalm 22:18)
Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved standing there, He said to His mother, "Woman, here is your son." Then He said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I'm thirsty!" A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hysop and held it up to His mouth.
When Jesus received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" Then bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit. John 19:23-30

John's account has a lot more detail. No one else mentions Mary the mother of Christ, except John and he does it in a personal way. What I wonder is, why did Jesus give John charge over Mary's welfare when she had other sons and daughters? Yes she was a widow and Jesus being the eldest had responsibility for her, but why John?

John has Jesus drinking some of the wine, the others refer to Him being offered it but not actually drinking it.

The division of Jesus' clothes and the importance of biblical reference to it also is given by John. John probably did not get the full picture until after Jesus had risen from the dead.

Tonight I went to see Risen, the movie. It was quite good. There is a Roman centurion as a central figure and how he discovers the truth about Jesus, a good story. In it we saw how Jesus' death affected one of the centurion's that had crucified Him, he was speechless and emotionally smitten by all that transpired. It is always good to see scripture play out before you.

Jesus then gave up His Spirit. He died before the two criminals and when He said, "It is finished," it was finished. Praise God!
