The Last Supper
And when the hour came, Jesus reclined at table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; For I say to you, I shall eat it no more until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
And He took a cup and when He had given thanks, He said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine at all until the kingdom of God comes.
Then He took a loaf of bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them saying, "This is my body which is given for you; do is in rememberance of Me." In like manner, He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is poured out for you." Luke 22:14-20
The kingdom of God was the new, Jesus was about to open the door, through His sacrifice, into the new. After Jesus' death and resurrection the way was complete, the kingdom of God had come.
What Jesus was saying, "Guys, this is My last meal before my death." He was not referring to some time way ahead in the future. It was the next thing to happen. We know that Judas goes off to betray Jesus in the same night. It was the next thing to happen. When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His death and resurrection, He again ate and drank with them.
The kingdom of God is among us and for us who believe and trust in His power, great signs and wonders happen. It therefore falls to us to believe. Amen!
