Whose Authority?
One day as He was teaching in the temple courts and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to Him. "Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, " they said. "Who gave you this authority?" Luke 20:1,2
The crux of the matter is: "Did we give you permission to do what you are doing? Don't you realise we are the ultimate authority? Sure we can't heal the sick or raise the dead, but who needs them anyway."
Don't you see the self- righteousness bristling up, much like a peacock, and confronting the Son of God. How arrogant! How foolish! Yet people are still doing it. 'How dare you God demand to be GOD didn't you know I am God around here!!!'
Because their demand was so foolish and so flawed, Jesus replied with a question of His own, one that would reveal they true colours and their foolishness. To avoid the revelation they said they did not know the answer. This further incensed them.
We can't demand to be right, to be God, to be lord. We are unable to pull it off without a tremendous cost. Humbling ourselves to the hand of Christ is definitely a wise move. Amen!
