Ordinary, Nice People
Those who had been scattered as a result of the persecution that started because of Stephen made their way as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message to no one except the Jews. But there were some of them, Cypriot and Cyrenian men, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Hellinists, proclaiming the good news about the Lod Jesus. The Lord's hand was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord. Then the report about them was heard by the church that was at Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to travel as far as Antioch. When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged all of them to remain true to the Lord with a firm resolve of the heart, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And large numbers of people were added to the Lord. Then he went to Tarsus to search for Saul, and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught large numbers. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. Acts 11:19-26
What a nice man Barnabas was. Scripture even says he was a good man. He willingly went to Antioch to encourage the believers and then went in search of Saul and brought him back there to minister to the believers.
Scripture also tells us he was a man full of faith. Well done Barnabas!
I am greatly encouraged when I see good men caring for their wives, loving each other and being jolly nice guys. I went out to dinner with a group from my church as it was one of the men's birthday. We had good clean fun and I say fun.
Tonight I learned that the man who's birthday we were celebrating is watching his 36 year old son die of terminal cancer, he is grieving, but it does not show.
Yesterday in church I saw a mum, dad and son all worshipping together and rejoiced that they were ordinary, uncomplicated people who loved God. Another son plays drums at 14, and is jolly good, and a daughter sings, and is jolly good. But what I like most is the way they love each other. They are not 'power people' but lovely ordinary folk who know how to love.
Do not despise yourself because you are not a power person, a high flyer, be who you are, love your family and love God! Amen!
