Presumption
Don't become idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink; and got up to play. Let us not commit sexual immorality as some of them did, and in a single day 23,000 people fell dead. Let us not test Christ as some of them did and were destroyed by snakes. Nor should we complain as some of them did, and were killed by the destroyer.
Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us, on whom the end of the ages has come. So, whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it. 1Cor 10:1-13
The reference that Paul gives at the beginning of these passages relates to the children of Israel building the golden calf, getting up the next morning to make offerings and then eat and drink and play. We find this in exodus 32:6.
Paul is giving us a warning. For those of us who say: 'This is the New Testament, God does not judge like that any more.' I would not be too quick to presume. Presumption deceives us into believing that God will forgive us anyway and that leads to slackness in our walk with Him.
For the church that condones, adultery, homosexuality, greed, avarice, gluttony and the like, you need to read the book of revelation and see what God had to say to the churches.
Paul in this book is admonishing the church for its pride, arrogance and sexual immorality. He is warning them that God is not the push over they assume. He still isn't!!
