Baptised For the Dead?
Otherwise what will they do who are being baptise for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, then why are people baptised for them? Why are we in danger every hour? I affirm by my pride in you that I have in Christ Jesus our Lord: I die every day! If I fought wild animals in Ephesus with only human hope, what good did that do for me? If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived: "bad company corrupts good morals." come to your senses and stop sinning, for some people are ignorant about God. I say this to your shame. 1Cor 15:29-34
When faced with losing someone we care for to death and knowing they did not completely come through the expected path we have we can resort to all sorts of interesting rituals out of fear. Where is faith? Paul did not practise this ritual himself it seems to be something particularly peculiar to the Corinthian church. It may have come from Jewish believers who, in their previous religion, practised something similar.
When my dad was dying I sought the Lord. My dad was a devout Catholic but did not have a faith like mine. I asked the Lord what more I could do for my dad. the Lord's reply astounded me. He said, "Leave your dad to me I have him." From my observation and understanding about salvation my dad did not have the same experience as me but what he had was acceptable to the Lord. There was nothing more I could do but love him and care for him as I had been.
When dad did pass away I sensed his spirit looking down on us, in the spirit I whispered, "Now you will know the Jesus I knew dad." I had complete confidence that dad was with the Lord. Whilst I take my mother to visit dad's gave every time she is in town, I know he is not there.
We must come to the Lord in faith and trust Him for the answers, He holds the keys of death and hell. He alone is God. Amen!
