He is My Shield
God — His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
Psalms 18:30 HCSB
This Psalm conveys David's exultation at His deliverance from the hand of Saul. It is filled with word pictures.
'Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the mountains trembled; they shook because He burned with anger. Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud beneath His feet. He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. He made darkness His hiding place, dark storm clouds His canopy around Him.
He talks of God coming to His defence.
Last night I watched 'Alice through the looking glass with my eldest grandson. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so colourful and creative.
As I read this Psalm I saw it in similar visual display. In the movie Alice came to the rescue of the Mad Hatter's family. Yet here we have our God coming to our rescue. He is outside time, Alice was caught by time, which was portrayed by a person with clock mechanism for a brain and a clockface for a heart. Our God is bigger than time.
One particular verse jumps out at me:
Your humity lifts me up. How does our God humble Himself? When this was written Christ had not come, yet David sees God humbling Himself. How? In deignig to come to His rescue, perhaps!
I must admit that we live in a different dispensation. We are taught to love our enemies. This Psalm conflicts with the New Testament teaching of love and forgiveness. David is exulting in smashing his enemies. We have to leave this vengeance to the Lord and His timing. Amen!
