Depression


Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.
Psalms 42:11 HCSB

Depression is a horrible black fog. It consumes all hope and vision of the future. So many are depressed. If you read the whole Psalm, the writer is feeling far from God. The obvious reason we feel far from God is sin but there is also trauma.

After separation from my husband I went through depression, in fact it tried to swallow me up. However I pressed into God because I knew He would be my salvation, and He was. Whilst depression dogged my for many years, I can now recognise what depressed me, loss and failure.

Depression tries to obliterate the hope of salvation. I have friends who are medicated because of depression. Unless they take the medication they are overcome by blackness. They have not found their hope. If you read the whole of Psalm 42 you will see the writer is, as he says, depressed. Uet, he recognises that his hope is in the Lord.

To find God as the answer for anything we struggle with is not often immediate. At times it is a walking through experience. For me that is exactly what it was. I had to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. There was no option. I had a very good companion, the Lord Himself, but otherwise was alone.

The emotion of being alone in blackness is overpowering but we have a God who has promised to be there for us. Many are taking their own lives, many are young people. Often drugs and alcohol are involved but what is obvious is the enemy of our souls is busy killing and destroying.

Having an anchor in Christ and belonging to a body of believers is important. Depression isolates us and tells us we don't belong. It is a liar. We must believe what the word of God says about us and not what we feel. Having someone to talk to is imperative. Amen!

I want to.pray for you if this is your struggle:
Father, thank you that the is an answer to this blackness. Father if there is something sinful in the way, I repent and ask for cleansing. Father reveal Your presence to me right now, let me know Your Holy Spirit is here for me, be my God. Lord please provide someone for me to talk to? Please provide a strong Christian friend who has been where I am and can lovingly show me the way out. Thank You. Amen!

Little Things Grow

The boy's mother said to Elisha, "as The Lord lives and you yourself live, I will not leave you. So he got up and followed her. 2 Kings 4:30 The Shunamite woman had travelled to Mt Carmel to find Elisha after the death of her son. Although Elisha had sent his servant Gehazi to the boy with his staff the woman had come to find Elisha and was not leaving without him. I like this lady's spirit. I am sure The Lord God Almighty also valued her heart. She had a heart for God and made room for Him in her world. Now, having lost her son she knew what to do: find Elisha and not let him go until he came to restore her son. What made the Shunamite woman believe that Elisha could raise her son? Was it the same faith that made her provide him a place to stay in her home? I believe it was God working in her life. I am grateful for her faith, I can read and be encouraged.
