His Return
so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.
Hebrews 9:28 HCSB
This morning as I came to read my bible there was a favourite song going through my head: Bless the Lord oh My Soul. As I read the above verse, in fact the whole of the chapter, I heard another song: Jesus, Lover of My Soul. It was an old Hillsong song. if you want you can Google it and you will provide a Utne clip.
The writer of the book of Hebrews is presenting Jesus as the perfect sacrifice and an end to the slaughter of animals who were imperfect. In this chapter he describes the function of the then present temple in Jerusalem and the inefficiency of it. He then goes on to reveal Jesus as the perfect lamb.
Jesus not only died for my sins but He is coming again in glory. Now, whether this.is in my lifetime or not, He is coming to either take all His people home or just me, because my time is up. Either way I don't mind. I need to be ready for both.
Do any of you catch buses or trains daily? You know you must be up, showered and out the door and at the station by the time the bus comes. Same here! Jesus taught much about being ready: the story about the 10 virgins; the story about the ruler who went away leaving a servant in charge are two such teachings. In both parables the Lord returned and found someone not ready and that person was locked out or thrown out of the kingdom. Jesus made a point that, because the master or bridegroom delayed, the servants slept or were slack. He warned about being vigilant. Being vigilant carries a prize, being slack a penalty.
This past year we have seen the death of many celebrities, most through old age and some through suicide. They have all gone into eternity but where in eternity have they gone? Heaven or hell? He'll.is real. We can scoff but it is real.
For the Christian is just getting by enough, the using of the Son of God as a meal ticket enough? No! How arrogant! I want to be close, to see Him always. His ways are my ways. Amen!
