Godly Behaviour
Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, God’s wrath comes on the disobedient, and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.
Colossians 3:5-10 HCSB
What does putting to death look like? Let's pretend we can grab our carnal nature as if it was a chicken. In Nepal the butcher shops are open booths, along with flies and hungry dogs. I met a man recently who sells chicken for cooking. In his freezer he had 4 or 5 chickens.
When I was a child I would watch my dad go to the chicken coop and grab a chook. Chicken are silly. If you grab them by the neck they go limp. Until you have them by the neck they fight, squark and flap vigorously. Our flesh is much like this. If we are attempting to walk in self control, for example, we have a fight. I have found fasting the best weapon for the flesh. It is like an axe on the throat of the chicken.
Paul is exhorting us to put our flesh to death. If any of the following plague you, fast. The sneakiest is lying. We cover our heart attitude and pretend we are righteous and put on a false face. This destroys the life of the Spirit within and cages us in self-effort. God is not mocked! A discerning Christian will also know and avoid us. We must repent and live in the truth. Amen!
