Yahweh

The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.

The first time we see God called Yahweh was when Moses asked God:" who will I say sent me?": God said; " I am!" Yahweh is the Hebrew for Yahweh. Imagine how this stacked up against all other gods. There was the god of this and that, but here was the God who said He was. This takes away all competition. How do you measure a god who 'is' against the sun god or the earth god or the god of fertility? 'I am' is above and beyond all others.

God goes on to prove He is greater than any god of the Egyptians and any nation the Israelites passed through on their way to the promises land. Soon all the known peoples come to fear the God of the Israelites. Soon God's own people come to know His greatness.

When Jesus came God became personal. With Christ came the knowledge that Yahweh was indeed Father. Knowing God was Father changed the dynamics. A father everybody had had at one time. This gave people a reference point. Jesus goes on to teach His disciples how to relate to their Father, how to pray to their Father. It went from having a name you dare not speak to 'pappa daddy'.

Our God is a good good Father, as the song goes. As we discover who God is to us we find 'who we are.' We are loved by our Father. He is beyond all earthly Fathers. There is no abuse in Him. His love for us compelled Him to give His Son to buy us back. We are His treasure, His delight. We can trust Him. We can run to Him for love and protection. Amen!
