Seeking Him First

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
Matthew 6:33 HCSB

This verse comes directly after being told not to worry about food, drink and clothing. I have never worried about these. In a land where tap water is available I always have had something to drink. Also I have had something to eat. I may have lacked money to buy food but I always managed, God provided.

I remember one Christmas having only $34 to buy groceries, so I prayed and went and bought what I could. It was amazing how much I was able to buy. I was invited to my son's house Christmas Day and He asked me if I needed money and I said it would be helpful. He gave me $700.

At no time have I gone without clothes. My cupboard is full. My mother keeps trying to give me more and so I have to refuse. There was a time when I loved to shop. I don't now. I buy what I need.

We can have a mindset of lack, of self-pity or greed for more when we don't need it. When I need something I ask my God and He provides. Recently I needed new hiking boots(I do a lot of walking and climbing of hills) and asked God for a pair. It was mother's day soon after and my son called saying: "I want to give you some money, it won't be much but I want to give it." He gave me $300, the exact price of a nice pair of hiking boots.

God's word tells us to ask Him when we lack, I do and He provides. Now, to people who live in abject poverty or who are oppressed, their faith towards God would need to be stronger than mine. I have not experienced this yet I have experienced very hard times for a westerner. My experiences would have people crying with self-pity and complaining against God, they would be lined up at Centrelink(our government support agency). However, fortunately, it has made me tougher and more determined.

Now, I can see God's abundance coming towards me and now I can go and help the downtrodden in life. We are given much so we can give much and not spend it on ourselves.
