Doing Good

Make sure you don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship—a different kind of “sacrifice”—that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets. Hebrews 13:16 MSG

What is the common good? I can imagine it is the state you find when you make room for others. Today I had a test. I think I failed. I was busy navigating the collection of all the material my accountant wanted for my last Year's tax return. I had to call a bank I had had a loan with for a statement and was led to reset passwords etc. Suddenly the doorbell rang and there was a young man who wanted to convince me to move away from my current electricity provider. He would not take 'No' for an answer and unfortunately I had to shut the door in his face. As I walked away I apologised to the Lord. Then the phone rang, another sales person. This time I was polite but firm. I wish I did not shut the door in the young man's face.

I had an opportunity to do good and failed. Yes it was small but I get these tests just to keep me humble and supple. Praise God!

Being mindful of doing good easily is waylaid by stress and business. May God grant us the grace to stay aware. Amen!
