First Trust

“I assure you,” He said, “unless you are converted and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child — this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one child like this in My name welcomes Me. Matthew 18:3‭-‬5 HCSB

Jesus was not referring to all childish behaviours here, he was referring to simple trust that little children usually have. We can exemplify the selfish without being encouraged, quite well.

I have little neices who live next door. Their little faces look up with open trust. My responsibility to them is to care for them, look out for them. I have older nephews who live across the street and the older they get the less trusting they become.

We become less trusting and cynical as we age, unfortunately. When we must wait for a promise or persevere in faith we grow weary. Then what does Jesus's comment mean to us? Perhaps He is saying: "trust Me, one more time!"

Why do children trust less as they grow up? Because they have been disappointed. So, put a lifetime of disappointments together, even if they have been from other mortals and we struggle to trust our God.

Jesus is calling us back to first trust. He is inviting us to happily, live in simple trust towards Him. Can we do it?
