First Pride..Then Crash!

First pride, then the crash— the bigger the ego, the harder the fall. Proverbs 16:18 MSG https://bible.com/bible/97/pro.16.18.MSG

Ego is all about self: how good I am, how clever I am, I am so good, I work so hard etc

Why do we make it about us? How does the ego become inflated?
It is good to finish well, but what finish will we settle for? The apostle Paul said: bodily exercise is of some good but spiritual exercise is more important (my paraphrase). 1 Tim 4:8.  The only stretch that does not inflate is the humble stretch towards God. All other conquests can open us up to inflated egos. This is not to say God does not want us to exercise, some exercise and circumspect eating are wise.

If you have seen Chariots of Fire you will remember the hero, Eric Liddell. Eric knew God had called him to run, but this was just a small part of who he was. Eric died in China as a missionary. His heart beat for the lost. God used him mightily. Eric did not make running about him but about God. He ran to honour his God.

In all things, Jesus must be the motive. Amen!
