What Are These Promises?

Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.
2 Corinthians 7:1 NLT

What promises is Paul referring to here? If we look back into even the last chapter we find:
For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation. 2 Cor 2:2

And again God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 2 Cor  6:16

Paul is referring to God's promise to live with us, for us to be His temple.
Have anyone see elaborate churches or temples? Imagine having the God of heaven living in us, what manner of the temple would you design for Him? Would you have gold, silver or bronze fittings, how big would it be? Would you have candles? Incense? Singers? Musicians?

The Lord Himself tells us what He would prefer: justice and mercy. This includes forgiveness, repentance, healing of breaches, generosity. In fact, love would be what He prefers His temple constructed from. The love that Paul tells us about in 1 Cor 13.

Let us make room for Him. Amen!
