rivers
On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” John 7:37-38 NLT
When Jesus stood up and said these words, I imagine He sensed many thirsty souls around Him. The temple guards had been ordered to arrest Jesus, but returned enpty handed, perhaps they recognised their thirst.
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus privately, stood and defended Jesus saying, "every man deserves a trial". Nicodemus was treading on dangerous ground, he was in jeopardy of losing his position or worse being accused along with Jesus.
Recognising our thirst is important. Our flesh needs plenty of water and at times we fail to recognise the signs, to our detriment. It is the same with the spirit. If we don't know when our spirits are dry we are in danger. Yet, the joy for those who do and go to Jesus for infilling. Fortunately I do, my flesh becomes more prominent. This is when I must switch off natural stimulus and seek God.
Rivers are refreshing. Rivers cascading down rock surfaces are thrilling. Keep the river flowing! Amen!
