a new way
The very next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and yelled out, “Here he is, God’s Passover Lamb! He forgives the sins of the world! This is the man I’ve been talking about, ‘the One who comes after me but is really ahead of me.’ I knew nothing about who he was—only this: that my task has been to get Israel ready to recognize him as the God-Revealer. That is why I came here baptizing with water, giving you a good bath and scrubbing sins from your life so you can get a fresh start with God.” John 1:29-31 MSG

Baptism reflects what we believers see as the change within. I have died to my old life and rise again to a new life in Christ.
John was baptising people preparing them for the revealing of Jesus and His ministry. He knew his ministry and recognised that his time was up. He had done his job.
John never became a follower of Jesus, I wonder why? He introduces Jesus and then continues to minister until King Herod jails him and eventually cuts off his head. Did he have to die? What would have happened if he told his troops, " ok boys, times up, now to follow Jesus!" Would he have died just the same? I think that is a question I will ask him when I see him, with his head back on.
As a believer in Jesus I must follow Him where He leads, even if it takes me into danger. There's the challenge!
