workers

37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” Matthew 9:37‭-‬38 HCSB

What motivated this comment by Jesus? Compassion!  The verse before says: ..He had compassion on them because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd.

Sheep that do not have a shepherd are prey to wild animals, they become tangled in thorn bushes, wire from old fences, fly blown and filled with worms. Sheep with a shepherd  are protected and cared for.

How can workers, who go into the harvest become shepherds? First, they must see themselves as shepherds, carers of the sheep, not an occasional stranger that has a good word for them. A shepherd is committed, stays put, prays for his sheep and looks to their welfare.

I have a paddock of sheep. They live in my street. My God is good, He has sent me workers. Today I found a new resident who has the heart of a shepherd. Awesome! I pray over, watch over my sheep. I cook them scones and bread, put plasters on scraped knees, love on them, encourage them.

I am so.grateful for my new workers. I saw one in action today. She had reached my neighbour. YES!
