treasure houses

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.

Matthew 6:19 NLT

I don't think we understand this verse, as we have houses full to overflowing with possessions. I watch the Ukrainians lose their homes and their cars and all they held dear. It is all gone. Many end up in refugee camps, with a few clothes and essentials. If I asked them what is important to them, they would probably say family and country, not things.

In Australia we are ravaged by fires, floods and cyclones. These all take away possessions quickly. Yet we all go back to accumulating. We have more thieves than ever, yet we install alarms and keep collecting.

I have just awoke from a dream in which there was a farming couple who refused to borrow money to make their way. They struggled, but believed they were right in abstaining from borrowing. As a consequence they lived very simply, yet the world outside thought of them as freaks.

Does it matter what others think of us? Only God's opinion matters. Treasure in heaven is more important than treasure here below. Amen
