““You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:14-16 NLT
Good deeds are light for those who live in darkness. Recently I asked the young man who wanted people to help him in Nepal’s poor district: “why do you want to teach these people Enlish?” He replied, “we will show we love them by doing this as they want their children to learn English and it is not available to them”. Loving is doing something for someone that they cannot do for themselves. It is also something that the world does not care to give them. English opens doors of opportunity.
When I asked my family if I could buy a cow for a poor person instead of give them gifts they do not need they replied “sure, we support you!” These acts are different to the world’s ways and are lights. Teaching Sunday School to unchurched relatives also speaks.
Each of us can do and be lights as we respond to God’s promptings. He is our saviour! He is the true light, and just as the Moon reflects the Sun’s glory so do we reflect His glory!
Be a light!
