“For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.””Jeremiah 31:25 NLT
This scripture comes from a word of God restoring Israel back to their land. The prophesy goes on to say that no longer will people not know the Lord or need to be told to believe, that God will write His laws on their hearts. This concept is true for us Gentiles. When we are born again we have His Spirit within us, and His Spirit directs us to truth.
Although this scripture was spoken to Israel we can appropriate it for ourselves, for God’s word applies to all. Jesus actually said: “come to me all you weary and heavy laden, take My yoke upon you and I will give you rest for your soul.”(Matt 11:28-30) Jesus’ rest involves His yoke. I take this to mean accepting Him as Saviour and walking with Him as Lord.
Rest is important. Both physical and spiritual rest are both important. Jesus gives us spiritual rest, we must make room for physical rest. These past two days I have had an enforced rest. It started with being unwell and needing to rest. However, I recovered, but still took the time to rest. I have read books and slept. It has been good for my body.
The most beneficial rest is spiritual rest. Having rest from an agitated struggle is so peaceful. Jesus definitely does give the best rest. Amen!
