What is Matthew referring to here when he says ‘that is why’? Verses 19-34 all talk about what we focus on: worry about finance; the kingdom of God. Here Matthew writes that Jesus said: “you cannot serve two masters: God and money;” Your eye is the lamp of the body.” Although different perspectives both deal with focus. If our eye is always on money and how to make more, spend more, get more then our eye is dark and then our whole body is full of darkness. However, if we are seeking God and His kingdom first then we allow Him to take care of the finances.
Worry ties us to things which are tied to money: housing, clothing, food, transport and entertainment. Yesterday my grandson spent $ 243 on Leggo without blinking. The desire for the particular model consumed him. He is 11. Fortunately he had the money and he found the Leggo at a bargain price. However, it was his sister’s birthday and she received nothing. He did not see this a problem.
In a world tht focuses upon entertainment and the stuff that provides it, the word of God becomes irrelevant. I have a young envangelist friend desperate for funds to build a church. His needs do not rate in the world of entertainment and self. The west has lost its way, its enemy is distracting it full time. Have mercy Lord!
