“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”Psalms 139:23-24 NLT
Just had a dream about a marriage that was struggling. The husband left hints in his sarcastic way that they needed to talk and the wife ignored them as sarcasm that did not bear bothering with. The couple had just had people checking their alarm systems and found that the cover over the alarm system was missing, thus exposing the settings to potentials housebreakers. While the wife was trying to find the people who did the check and regain the covers the husband made a temporary wooden cover. The couple had a female German shepherd who was a beautiful animal and there came a woman into the yard who told them to breed with her. Now this dog was not their own but had belonged to a friend who left her with them. The friend had since passed away and the dog remained with them. In the dream the woman worked for a company who had an annual conference in England. The wife was considering going and the husband could think of nothing worse. The dream was actually about restoration of communication and talking about the difficulties and dealing with them. By communication the walls began to fall but there was a long way to go. The wife needed to face the sarcasm and deal with the problems.
Why did I write that? Perhaps that person may read it and know it is time to communicate. The husband was ready to leave the marriage. Yet, open and willing communication may save it.
In the psalm above David invites God to inspect his heart. He wants deeper communion with the Lord. God does not need to be invited as He already sees, however, as we invite Him to inspect our hearts and know us we make ourselves vulnerable, and face the contents of our hearts. Facing truth is important, as is repentance. Repentance comes as we face our sin and change our ways. Repentance can be towards others and God. Others need us to face our sinful ways, repentance towards God shows we are serious. Remember, repentance means a change of ways, not ‘sorry I was caught!’
