“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”1 John 4:7-12 NIV
If we study the way Jesus spoke to the disciples, all of it, we discover that there were many times He said, “are you still failing to understand (my version ) or “you don’t know what you’re asking for “. He was continually teaching them and reprimanding them, as a teacher would. Yet, Jesus said, “if you have seen Me you have seen the Father”. Although our God is a God of love He still corrects us.
Love is not compliant, it does not allow sinful behaviour without speaking. However, it chastises in love. It does not take the matter personally and become offended, but rather see it as an opportunity to lovingly discipline.
Jesus and The Father are secure in who they are, they do not become offended, they act. We see throughout the Old Testament how God disciplined. When His people refused to listen He sent them into captivity for 70 years. When they seriously rebelled, they died. I don’t advocate killing people, we will end up in jail. However, discipline is important. Separating ourselves from them will keep us sane. God did not talk to His people for 400 years before Jesus came, and after Jesus came it has been over two thousand years, they now have the scriptures and witnesses.
Love can be tough! Amen!
