“Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.”3 John 1:11 HCSB
This beautiful verse is sandwiched in between a report about a man called Diotrephes who opposed John and did not welcome people in the church, and another called Demetrius who had a good report. Imagine being the man Diotrephes who opposed the man whom Jesus loves! How proud! How wrong!
What makes men oppose what God is doing and the people He uses for His glory? Offence and pride are two big reasons. Religious Spirits infiltrate the church and present as righteous defenders of the truth. However, Jesus warned that just as He was opposed by the Scribes and Pharisees, they would be also. He warned that family would betray family, that disciples would be persecuted and even inprisoned.
The above verse exhorts the readers of John’s letter, to avoid evil and choose that which is good. This word ‘good’ covers all that God is, as Jesus said, ‘only God is good’. If you are unsure what this covers, seek God in prayer, read your Bible, and do what it says, and finally stay in godly fellowship. Amen!
