Salt
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men. Matthew 5:13
In the Old Testament salt was used for it's purifying properties. Jesus was saying our role is to purify a corrupt world through our example of righteous living and proclamation of the gospel.
Contaminated salt does not promote purity. The way the salt in my life will lose it's taste is by me living foolishly and indulging in immoral behaviour. If I am doing these things then I am living an unrighteous lifestyle and will be promoting destruction rather than purification.
Salt that loses it's flavour is spread on the ground where you want to kill vegetation. Such is the fatal effect of unrighteous Christians, nothing grows wherever they go.
Thrown out refers to the disposal of something worthless. Trampled alluded to the treatment of immoral Christians by the world. (commentary taken from HCSB study bible)
Last night on the news there was much made of a catholic priest who is alleged to have sexually abused a boy over a period of time. The reason it was in the news was because a politician used his parliamentary privilege to name and shame the man because it was alleged that the catholic church had know about the accusation for four years and not acted.
If the world sees the church as an abuser then they throw it out and trample it under foot and this is exactly what is happening.
