He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.
The fear of the Lord gains a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 15:32,33
This is amazing! There would be many who would say, 'because I like myself I will not let you tell me what to do' yet Solomon says the opposite.
So to love myself I seek right paths, right living and that includes finding someone to speak into my life, so that I am not 'lawless', someone to whom I am accountable.
I have a girlfriend who grew up in Myrtleford, a predominantly Italian neighborhood. My friend said that in such communities you see the grandparents, parents and children all living together and the older speaking into the lives of the younger. This is accountability.
When things go wrong is when children leave home to 'do their own thing' and become their own authority, scary thought.
Not being accountable to anyone is dangerous, this is where you become your own authority and lawless.
As Christians we are given, again, an opportunity to take mentors, mothers and fathers in the faith. Being accountable is wise!
The ultimate submission is daily taking the word of God and allowing it to chasten and rebuke but also encourage. I fear (respect) my God and His ways as I know waywardness wait outside my gate.
