He Came
In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over the flock. Then an angel of The Lord stood before them, and the glory of The Lord shone about them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all people: today a Saviour, who is the Messiah The Lord, was born for you in the city of David. This will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough."
Suddenly there were a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
And peace on earth to people He favours."
Luke 2:8-14
Imagine being The Lord of heaven and submitting yourself to be a baby in the womb. For 9 months going through the foetal development we all went through, what patience!
Imagine being born a helpless baby, laying aside all your glory and power and depending on two ordinary folk to care for you, keep you safe and bring you to maturity.
Jesus didn't have to come this way but He did. Why? So that He could be just like us in every way, except he was sinless. He would grow up, just as we had and learn to be obedient, just as we did.
Can we accept a Saviour who has been where we have been? He was rejected by those He created, shunned by those He had called His own and treated shamefully just for us. He took our sin and shame and took it to the cross, saying: "it is finished!" He paid the price of all our foolishness and pride so that we could walk free of the chains that bound us.
Today we are reminded that He came. Christmas is a reminder that a Saviour was born, one that took all our punishment and offers us freedom. This Christmas freedom and peace are ours, if we choose to accept them. Invite Him in! Amen!
Glory to God, in the highest! Thank you Lord! Amen!
