Child of Promise
The child grew up and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw Ishmael mocking- the one the Egyptian slave had borne to Abraham. So she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac!"
Now this was a very hard thing for Abraham because of Ishmael, who was his son. But God said, "Do not be concerned about the boy and your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac. But I will also make a great nation of the slave's son because he is your heir." Genesis 21:8-10
Ishmael was conceived through a lack of faith, Isaac through faith. Not long before Isaac was conceived Abraham had allowed Abimelech to take Sarah into his harem, all because he lacked faith that God would protect him and his household. However, perhaps this was just what Sarah needed to believe she was indeed young enough to conceive. Being thought beautiful at 90 was no feat, yet she had been taken into a harem at 90. This is not mentioned but isn't the possibility there? When God actually told Abraham Sarah would conceived she had laughed in disbelief.
I don't know about you but now days, in my country, we think women who are 90 past everything, being desirable and having children are definitely not on the radar.
What is God telling you that you will do in His name and you are doubting? He is telling me plenty. My mirror tells me another thing, but my God is the same as Sarah's God. Yet the fear of creating an Ishmael is greater in me than the fear of producing an Isaac.
The delight that Isaac brought to Abraham and Sarah was real, he was their child of promise. I want what is birthed in faith, I want the laughter, blessing and joy that promise brings. How about you?
