Jacob went on his way, and God's angels met him. When he saw them, Jacob said, "this is God's camp." So he called the place Mahanaim.
Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he could not defeat him, He struck Jacob's hip socket as they wrestled and dislocated his hip. Then he said to Jacob, "let Me go, for it is daybreak."
But Jacob said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
What is your name?" The man asked.
"Jacob," he replied.
"Your name will no longer be Jacob," he said. "It will be Israel because you have wrestled with God and with men and have prevailed."
Then Jacob asked, "what is your name?"
But He answered, "Why do you ask My name?" And he blessed him there. Genesis 32:1,2; 24-29
Jacob has a God encounter of a different kind. Fancy wrestling all night with God! Jacob was faced with an attack from his brother Esau. He had sent word ahead to Esau that he was coming and Esau set off with 400 men, enough to frighten a brother who had heard Esau threaten to kill him, the last time they spoke 20 years ago. Why 400 men? Did they have nothing better to do? Was it a huge welcoming party. Or was it Esau determined to put the fear of God up his brother?
In this frame of mind, Jacob had sent his family ahead of him across the brook and was alone. Then appears God, probably Jesus. Who said God was not into wrestling? The fact that the wrestling went all night tells there was a lot of energy pent up and no one was going to beat Jacob, especially when God had given him a promise to bless him and protect him and he was wanting to cash in his ticket.
How determined are you to take your promise? Does the threat of a crowd, an angry brother, the enemy saying "No!" Stop you? Get out your sword and use it. Do you recognise God? Do you know your answers are in Him? Do you know that Jesus tells us to knock and keep on knocking? The fights I have had for mine have been incredible. I have prayer walked, shouted, stomped on my enemy, called up every promise scripture I have known and more. I have refused to yield mine. God has promised it to me and it is mine, no one else's, it is mine! I have hammered the doors of heaven, he angles know me as ' that feisty little person who does not give in'. What is the name you are known by?
We are made to take territory not yield! Rise warrior!
