How We Handle Sin
Ithen the chief priests took the silver and said, "it is not lawful to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money." So they conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners. Therefore that field has been called Blood Field to this day. Matthew 27:6-9
Judas returned with the silver when he saw Jesus condemned to death. Perhaps he only wanted to shock Jesus into doing what he thought He should do all along, be a king, or perhaps his offense at Jesus' attitude to money was spent.
The reaction of the leaders showed that they knew Jesus was innocent. Their decision to buy a field to bury foreigners in was not going to free them from their guilt.
It is amazing how we can think by doing something that appears just and right can exonerate us from our sin and the consequences of it.
There was a prevalent thought in some Jews that believed criminals received atonement though death. Judas hanged himself, perhaps he thought the act would free him from his sin. Yet there is only One Redeemer and His name is Jesus! Amen!
