Lord of the Sabbath
On a a Sabbath, He passed through the grain fields. His disciples were picking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands and eating them. But some of the Pharisees said, " Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"
Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry- how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat? He even gave some to those who were wih him." Then He told them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Luke 6:1-5
The Jews venerated David and excused his behaviour. However, Jesus was telling them someone greater than David was here and all they were doing was eating grain as they walked through the fields.
I imagine the disciples were beginning to feel as if they had won the lottery, the law as being cut from their shoulders, their were beginning to behave like little, free children and Jesus as happy to let them and in fact was defensive of them.
Those Jesus spoke to were being given life changing truth and if they could accept it, they would also start to enter freedom. If they rejected His teaching then offense would set in and their cages would encase them in steel.
Jesus was in fact saying He was the Messiah. Could His listeners accept His teaching? I often wonder who these people were, did any come to know freedom? I can't wait to watch the full replay of history and then look for those who starred in the throng.
Today the words of Christ echo in the spirit. Today do you choose life or eternal bondage. Life involves knowing Him, oh what a joy! Still yourself and in the very depths of your being whisper, " Who are you Lord? Show yourself to me!"
