Clothed With Humility
And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.
1 Peter 5:5-7 HCSB
The word clothe means: literally tie yourseves around. So humility must be tied around me as I deal with my brothers and sisters. This is especially true when we disagree or are offended.
What does humility do? It causes us to step back and trust the Lord, to seek the Lord for the big picture. What am I missing? What can't I see? What is filtered by my own bias and attitude? Where is God leading this person? How would grace between us make a difference?
After all there is a compelling reason: God resists the proud. Why I am being proud, just right! Ha! Ha! Exactly! Proud! When we judge others as wrong and us as right we are proud. Of what only our deceived hearts will know.
I am travelling to Nepal with a guy from church and we are connected on viber with the people we are going to work with. This guy does not live like i do. He is different in every way. Yesterday he was telling me about another Nepali contacting him asking for a phone. Phones are in short supply. This man's work is interrupted by rain and we have had a lot of that lately. To me he does not have a lot of surplus but because there is a need he will endeavour to fill it. Now, really, it is none of my business what this man does with his money. Just because we have a journey in common does not allow me to become involved with an opinion, unless asked. Conversely I woke two nights ago with the Lord prompting me to buy a pair of shoes for someone in my church. My travelling companion knows about this but has refrained from an opinion.
Sharing a common walk does not require us to interfere with the walk of others, unless it is causing harm to someone or is sinful. We all have opinions, but that is exactly what they are, opinions.
We live in a world where everyone has an opinion and not a humble one either. It isnusually loud and put out there on social media. We could pursue humility more ajd be blessed by the outcome. Amen!
