Best Prayers
But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you pray, don’t babble like the idolaters, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words. Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him. Matthew 6:6-8 HCSB
When Jesus said these words the people would have been shocked as they saw and heard the opposite. Public display would often be for attention of man and not to God.
When I think of babbling I think of the prayers I said as a Catholic by rote not by heart. The Lord's prayer was meant to be an example and we have made it into 'the prayer'.
Praying from the heart in my room or up on my hill is now full of relationship not form or ritual. It is amazing the difference in language we have when we go from knowing about someone to knowing them personally. We become less formal and love couches our language as a fine embroidery.
Jesus knew His Father and His lesson about prayer came out of that relationship. His was full of respect and love. We can not go wrong with His model. Amen!
