The Day of the Lord
Seek the Lord , all you humble of the earth, who carry out what He commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be concealed on the day of the Lord ’s anger. Zephaniah 2:3 HCSB
This chapter is an interesting chapter. Zephaniah was a prophet in king Josiah's reign. Josiah's father amd grandfather were wicked kings who led the people into idolatry. Zephaniah's prophesy probably came before Josiah's reformation and the reading of the scriptures to the people, thus leading them into repentance. This book was, therefore, written around 640bc. What an old but pertinent exhortation.
What a task Josiah would have had to bring His people to repentance and rid his people of idols that were firmly entrenched. The priests actually served God and Baal. I am sure God would not have been happy. In fact Zephaniah prophesied destruction amd only a remnant remaining. He talks about the 'Day of the Lord'. For God's people, they were used to battles that took much longer than a day but God was going to do something in a day.
When God moves He moves in might and power. There is a coming Day and the New Testament warns it will come suddenly when men are saying: "peace, peace." The second coming of Christ will be sudden.
The time is coming soon when Jesus will return and those who mocked Him will mourn. The backslidden will grieve and those who were faithful will be gone. Imagine a world without Christians. There will be no more restraint on evil. No one praying for families and friends or the lost. If Jesus delays it is for you. Come home!
