The Levites

The Lord spoke to Moses: "Take the Levites from among the Israelites and ceremonially cleanse them. This is what you must do to them for their purification: sprinkle them with  the purification water. Have then shave their entire bodies and wash their clothes, and so purify themselves. They are to take a young bull and its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering. Bring the Levites before the tent of meeting and assemble the entire Israelite community. Then present the Levites to the Lord and have the Israelites lay hands on them. Numbers 8: 5-10   Cleansing speaks of separation and preparation Sacrifice speaks of cost Having the Israelites lay hands on them speaks of dedication   Being a Christian involves all three. It is not just a matter of feeling convicted of sin, feeling warm and fuzzy or feeling anything in particular. Christianity is about separation, sacrifice and dedication.   ...

The House

On the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, along with the altar and all its utensils. After he anointed and consecrated these things, the leaders of Israel, the heads of the ancestral houses presented an offering. They were the tribal leaders who supervised the registration. They brought as their offering before the Lord six covered carts and 12 oxen, a cart from every two leaders and an ox from each one, and presented them in front of the tabernacle. The leaders also presented the dedication gift for the altar when it was anointed. Numbers 7: 1-3; 10   Although Reuben was, officially, the first born son, because of his sin with his father's concubine he was cursed by his father in Genesis 49: 'turbulent as water, you will no longer excel.' We see throughout Numbers that the tribe Judah is placed first on the east of the tabernacle and is the first tribe to bring an offering, it is also the largest tr...

Blessing Prayer

The Lord spoke to Moses: Tell Aaron and his sons how you are to bless the Israelites, Say to them: May Yahweh bless you and protect you; May Yahweh make His face to shine upon you; and be gracious to you; May Yahweh look with favour on you and give you peace. In this way they will pronounce My Name over the Israelites, and I will bless them. Numbers 6:24-27 As recipient of God's blessing Israel was to bless the nations. Blessing covered number of descendants; a fruitful land; good health; long life; deliverance from danger and oppression, protection from enemies; having the presence of God. I can invoke God's blessing by what I say over my own life. I can invite divine, biblical truth or speak worldly lies. Whose authority will I walk in? The bible tells me who I am; what my rights are; how God sees me. Therefore, what do I speak? If I speak what He speaks, we are in sync, and harmony exists. If I confess what my enemy makes me feel then I am out of protection and no...

The Nazarite

The Lord instructed Moses: "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When a man or woman makes a special vow, a Nazirite vow, to consecrate himself to the Lord, he is to abstain from wine and beer. (strong drink). You must not cut his hair throughout his time of consecration. He must be holy until the time is completed during which he consecrates himself to the Lord; he is to let the hair of his head grow long. He must not go near a dead body during the time he consecrates himself to the Lord. This is the law of the Nazirite: On the day his time of consecration is completed, he must be brought to the entrance to the tent of meeting. He is to present an offering to the Lord.... Numbers 61-3; 5,6;13,14 A Nazarite was one who was not a Levite but one who wanted to dedicate themselves to the Lord for a period of time. We see the mothers of Sampson and Samuel took a Nazarite vow during their time of barrenness and this Nazarite status was taken up by both Sampson and Samuel. Not c...

The Jealousy Ritual

The Lord spoke to Moses: "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: If any man's wife goes astray, is unfaithful to him, and sleeps with another, but it is concealed from her husband, and she is undetected, even though she has defiled herself, since there is no witness against her, and she wasn't caught in the act; and if a feeling of jealousy comes over the husband and he becomes jealous because of his wife who has defiled herself-or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he becomes jealous of her though she has not defiled herself- then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. The priest is to bring her forward and have her stand before the Lord. Then the priest is to take holy water in a clay bowl, and take some of the dust from the tabernacle floor and put it in the water. Numbers 5: 11-15; 16,17 The priest then has the woman take an oath and then the priest would proclaim: "If you have gone astray may your thigh shrivel and your belly swell", then t...

Order

Image
The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the Land of Egypt: "Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one. You and Aaron are to register those who are 20 years old or more in their military divisions-everyone who can serve in Israel's army. A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of the ancestral house. These are the names of the men who are to assist you..... Numbers 1:1-5 God knows everyone. Jesus told us even the hairs on our heads are numbered. When the counting was done there were: 46,500 Reubenites; 59,300 Simeonites; 45,650 Gadites; 74,600 Judahites; 54,400 Issacharites; 57,400 Zebulunites; 40,500 Ephraimites; 32,200 Manassehites, 35,400 Benjaminites; 62,700 Dannites; 41,500 Asherites, 53,400 Naphtalites, totalling 603,550. there were also...

The Tenth

Every tenth of the land's produce, grain from the soil, or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord: it is holy to the Lord. If a man decided to redeem any part of the tenth he must add a 1/5th to it's value. Every tenth animal from the herd or flock, which passes under the shepherd's rod, will be holy to the Lord. He is not to inspect whether it is good or bad, and he is not to make a substitution, both the animal and the substitute will be holy, they cannot be redeemed. Leviticus 27: 30-34 It seems the Lord was requiring the tenth of everything. This signified that the Lord was the source of everything. All came from Him. Yet this was not practiced consistently as Nehemiah had to re-institute the practice and in the book of Malachi God rebuked His people for failing to keep this instruction. What does the Lord require of us? We could say: 'We are now in Christ and are no longer obliged.' However, if we love God and want to honour Him then what is the problem...
